Flower Glossary Guide for Bouquets

11 Mar 2021

A flower bouquet is a creative arrangement of different types of flowers. Here are the meanings behind some commonly used flowers in flower bouquets!

Main Flowers

Rose symbolises love, romance and passion. Originally associated with Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of love, the classy and elegant appearance of roses make them one of the most popular flowers used in flower bouquets.
Hydrangea conveys a heartfelt emotion and deep understanding. It represents grace, beauty and unity. The hydrangea can be found in colours such as white, blue, pink and purple.
Sunflower symbolises loyalty, sincerity and happiness. Its name was derived from the resemblance of the flower to the Sun.
Peony symbolises romance, honour and compassion. A fun fact about peonies is that they used to be exclusive flowers of Chinese emperors. Today, they can be found in colours such as white, pink and red.

Filler Flowers

Filler flowers are flowers that accompany the main flowers in a flower bouquet. They play a supporting role of helping the main flowers in the flower arrangement stand out, as well as provide a structure for the bouquet.

Baby's breath is one of the most popular filler flowers used. It symbolises everlasting love, purity and innocence. Baby's Breath can be found in colours such as white, blue and pink.
Aster symbolises love, faith and wisdom. The flower was named after an ancient Greek word which is translated to "star" due to its unique shape.
Freesia symbolises trust and innocence. It is commonly known for its citrus fragrance and can be found in perfumes. The freesia can be found in colours such as white, red and yellow.
Snapdragon symbolises grace, virtue and strength. Its name was derived from the Greek word "antirrhinum". The snapdragon can be found in colours such as red, purple and white.
Matthiola symbolises happiness and contentment. It is also a widely used filler flower due to the wide palette of colours the flower can be found in which include peach, white, pink, purple, red and even yellow.
Waxflower, which is also known as chamelaucium, symbolises long-lasting love and patience. It is known for the waxy texture of its petals and fragrant leaves. The flower can be found in colours such as white, red and pink.

Exotic Flowers

Orchid is associated with love, beauty and strength. It is a flower that blooms easily under most conditions and is also known as Singapore's national flower.
Tulip symbolises love and passion. It is known for the symmetry of its shape and can be found in colours such as pink, yellow, orange and white.
Birds of paradise symbolises joy, freedom and optimism. Its name was derived from how the flower resembles a bird in flight when in bloom. While birds of paradise are more commonly known for their orange and blue colour combination, they can also be found in white.
